Welcome to the History Graduate Program at the University of Washington. We specialize in educating future historians who contribute to academic knowledge about history while also teaching and connecting with wider audiences. Our program currently has over 50 students working toward MA and PhD degrees across diverse historical disciplines, supported by faculty with extensive expertise. We promote interdisciplinary and comparative historical methods, enabling students to collaborate with faculty across multiple fields and with scholars in related UW programs. Both faculty and graduate students participate in numerous digital history initiatives aimed at enhancing research, education, and public engagement with historical studies.

While the University of Washington doesn't provide a dedicated History of Science or Science Studies degree, doctoral candidates can explore these areas within our history PhD program. A key advantage of both our MA and PhD programs is how history of science studies at UW connect with wider historical scholarship. PhD students are encouraged to utilize our department's policy permitting one doctoral field to be completed outside the department. Potential options include philosophy of science courses, advanced natural science studies for qualified candidates, or science studies offered by other humanities departments at the university.
