Students pursuing M.A./Ph.D. or Ph.D. degrees gain specialized knowledge in their chosen field while cultivating an understanding of diverse theoretical viewpoints and research methodologies in communication studies. The curriculum bridges humanities and social sciences through a shared foundational program and extensive graduate seminar offerings, available both within the Communication Department and across other University of Washington departments. The Communication MA/PhD program's Statistics Concentration equips students with specialized applied statistical skills for quantitative communication research. This concentration primarily follows a curriculum designed by the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS, course prefix: CS&SS) and aligns with similar academic tracks. Graduates of this concentration receive advanced statistical training tailored to communication and social science research, applicable to their individual scholarly pursuits. CSSS awards a Letter of Recognition to concentration completers, who may highlight this achievement on their CVs to demonstrate their quantitative expertise.

Ph.D. applicants must show proof of completion of a master's degree prior to starting the program, though it is common for those applying to the Ph.D. program to be working on their thesis in the year during which they apply.
M.A./Ph.D. applicants must show proof of completion of a U.S. equivalent bachelor's degree prior to starting the program, though it is common for applicants to be in their senior year of college when they apply to the M.A./Ph.D. program.
Full-time status is required for all funded students, but domestic U.S. residents who do not receive assistantships can enroll half-time (please note this is exceedingly rare). TOEFL - 80 IELTS: 6.5
