The University of Washington's School Psychology Program aims to train scientist-practitioners who apply research-based methods to improve the social-emotional and academic development of children. The Ph.D. program specifically develops health service psychologists skilled in culturally-sensitive, evidence-backed assessment, intervention, and consultation techniques to support diverse populations across all cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
The APA-accredited (since 1992) and NASP-approved (since 1995) doctoral program fulfills state licensing requirements for psychologists while preparing graduates for academic, clinical, and research careers. This 'specialist inclusive' PhD program integrates the three-year specialist degree curriculum into its six-year structure. Students without prior Master's or Specialist degrees in school psychology complete the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) coursework during the initial three years. Doctoral coursework begins in the third year, allowing students to concurrently finish their Ed.S.-level internship while advancing toward their PhD.
