Through academic coursework and practical training, doctoral students build a robust grounding in information science, mastering how to pinpoint key challenges and thoroughly investigate solutions. They gain comprehensive knowledge of the breadth, history, methodologies, challenges, and theoretical foundations that characterize the iSchool's distinctive cross-disciplinary perspective on information studies. The iSchool's Ph.D. candidates arrive with diverse professional backgrounds and academic preparation, spanning fields like information science, social sciences, computer science, library science, legal studies, and IT. This research-intensive doctoral program emphasizes generating and progressing novel insights with meaningful, real-world impact. Scholarly work centers on examining human interactions with information and its societal and technological consequences, tackling problems influencing how knowledge and information artifacts circulate between individuals across social, organizational, and personal spheres.

The UW Graduate School has a minimum GPA requirement. As detailed on their website, individual programs may consider qualified applicants with a GPA below a 3.0.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
TOEFL pBT - Minimum Required Score: 500
