The Ph.D. program focuses primarily on academic excellence and research, preparing students for university or college teaching roles in comparative and world literature, along with their chosen language and literature specialization. This 60-credit program builds on the M.A. degree and includes comprehensive exams in three fields plus a dissertation. We take great pride in our graduate education approach. Beyond delivering rigorous academic preparation, our faculty emphasize developing strong research initiatives while acquiring substantial teaching practice. CLCM graduate students consistently secure prestigious fellowships and awards to assist with dissertation work. The program encourages research through long-term initiatives and seminars covering topics like film studies, Chinese visual arts, television history, and other areas. Recent doctoral graduates have secured positions including a tenure-track role at Humboldt State University, a LSA Collegiate Fellowship at the University of Michigan, and a Visiting Lecturer post at Wellesley College. Our alumni have established thriving careers across academia (both domestic and international), education, corporate sectors, translation, and government service.
