The University of Washington stands as the most extensive higher education institution in the Pacific Northwest and has consistently led all U.S. public universities in federal research funding over the last ten years. During the 2012-2013 academic year, the UW Chemical Engineering Department enrolled 80 graduate students, with the majority working toward a Ph.D., though we're also seeing increasing interest in our MS program and welcome applications for that degree path. The Ph.D. program typically spans four to five years, combining coursework with intensive research culminating in a dissertation. The Master's program, lasting approximately two years, focuses more heavily on coursework, with most MS students opting for the non-thesis route (though a thesis option exists, it cannot be confirmed during the admission process). Those with strong research interests should consider applying directly to the Ph.D. program.

Graduate education here fosters a dynamic, collaborative environment where students work closely with faculty in a setting that's both intellectually stimulating and less formal than undergraduate studies. Our diverse faculty expertise allows students to explore multiple disciplines while receiving personalized mentorship. The curriculum covers fundamental chemical engineering topics like thermodynamics, transport phenomena, reaction engineering, and applied mathematics, while encouraging students to pursue additional courses that broaden their knowledge and support their research specialization.
