The Ph.D. represents the highest academic qualification available through UW Bioengineering. This interdisciplinary biomedical research and engineering program attracts students from diverse educational backgrounds, with graduates distinguishing themselves through exceptional accomplishments in bioengineering while developing strong capabilities in scientific leadership and autonomous research.
Bioengineering professionals combine concepts from various engineering fields and life sciences to innovate medical technologies and healthcare solutions. After establishing core knowledge in chemistry, biology, physics, physiology, fluid/solid mechanics, heat/mass transfer, circuitry, and biological signals, students can specialize in areas including tissue/protein engineering, muscular control systems, biomaterials, implantable/wearable devices, pharmaceutical/genetic therapies, medical imaging technologies, therapeutic ultrasound applications, nano/molecular engineering, microfluidic systems, computational simulations, synthetic biology, diagnostic tools for clinical settings, and worldwide healthcare initiatives.
While a completed MS degree is not required before beginning the PhD, every graduate student must have the following courses as part of her or his undergraduate education: ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, signal analysis, probability theory and statistics, programming, electrical engineering and physics, chemistry, materials science, processes and mathematics, and cell and molecular biology. Admitted students must be knowledgeable of these topics prior to entrance to the PhD program.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
