The University of Washington's Department of Anthropology focuses on three main subfields that shape its faculty, programs, and coursework. While graduate students can enroll in classes across all subdisciplines (and any university department), those applying for admission must select just one of these three programs. Doctoral candidates in anthropology at UW concentrate on a single subfield, each with distinct requirements. The Medical Anthropology and Global Health specialization combines knowledge from various health-related aspects within the Anthropology Department and throughout the university. This concentration is open to Ph.D. students in either Sociocultural Anthropology or Biological Anthropology. Though these programs have different foundational training, students are advised to explore health-focused courses in both subfields.
