The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program offers an advanced engineering education designed to equip students for leadership positions in academic, industrial, and research settings focused on aeronautics and astronautics. Most Ph.D. candidates enter the program after obtaining a bachelor's degree, typically holding a BS (or equivalent qualification) in aerospace or mechanical engineering. These students can choose between a direct Ph.D. track or opt to complete a Master of Science in Aeronautics & Astronautics as part of their doctoral journey.
Previous Academic Preparation: The Doctor of Philosophy is an advanced engineering degree. It is expected that admitted applicants will hold an undergraduate degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
Minimum GPA and Exam Scores: The University of Washington Graduate School requires an applicant to have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be considered eligible for admission. Beyond this, our department does not maintain a fixed minimum for either GPA or exam scores. However, admission to our department is competitive.
English Proficiency:
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides a profile of a candidate’s ability to use English. Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 1 to 9.
