The University of Florida's Astronomy Department has secured significant observation time on leading global telescopes by establishing itself as a top hub for astronomical instrumentation development.
Graduate students can pursue M.S., M.S.T., or Ph.D. degrees in astronomy through the department's programs. Planetary Systems research focuses on both observational and theoretical aspects, including planetary system formation, dynamical changes, and exoplanet discovery. Faculty participate in the Kepler Mission and Doppler surveys to detect exoplanets, while also investigating interplanetary dust and small celestial bodies in our solar system and neighboring star systems. Stellar populations research examines stars within the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, with special attention to binary star systems and blue stragglers. These investigations aim to apply stellar evolution theories to stars found in diverse cosmic environments.
