The Doctor of Philosophy program aims to train scientists who can independently identify and address challenges of significant scientific value. Specific PhD regulations are available through the MU Graduate School, while this section outlines physics-specific guidelines.
Degree Requirements
To earn a Ph.D., students must complete at least 18 credit hours beyond their Master's Degree with a minimum 3.0 (B) average, pass the Department Qualifying Examination at PhD standards, and fulfill residency obligations. No foreign language proficiency is mandated.
Required coursework for the PhD (supplementing MS Degree physics requirements) includes:
Physics 8640, Electrodynamics II (3 credits)
Physics 8720, Quantum Mechanics II (3)
Four advanced Physics and Astronomy electives (12)
Three electives must be 8000-level, with one permitted at 7000-level, including specialization-specific courses. With advisor and DGS approval, students may incorporate relevant 7000/8000-level courses from other departments to support their research.
MU mandates a total of 72 graduate credit hours (combining coursework and research) beyond undergraduate studies.
