The University of Washington's School of Music provides extensive professional education with programs focused on both performance and academic research. With more than 500 music students enrolled, the school offers various degree options including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy. Non-major students also frequently enroll for private lessons or join musical ensembles as extracurricular activities. The curriculum acknowledges music's dual aspects: as a creative art form that thrives through continuous contributions from composers, performers, and educators, and as an academic discipline within the humanities that demands scholarly analysis of its theoretical frameworks and historical evolution. Graduate programs create an enriching atmosphere for students to specialize further in either performance or academic research.
