Our Bachelor of Science in Physics stands among the nation's largest programs, conferring approximately 175 undergraduate degrees each year. Graduates pursue diverse career trajectories, including advanced studies in physics and related STEM fields, teaching positions across all educational levels, and roles in industries that prize strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving abilities.
The University of Washington Physics Department provides four specialized B.S. degree tracks to accommodate varying interests and objectives: Comprehensive, Applied Physics, Biological Physics, and Teaching Physics. While students select their preferred track when declaring their major, they retain the flexibility to modify their choice until graduation application.
The Comprehensive track is designed for students seeking an in-depth physics education. This path is ideal for those who wish to explore physics' full spectrum, understand the mathematical foundations of physical theories, and prepare for physics-focused careers. Prospective graduate students in physics, astronomy, or similar disciplines will find this track particularly suitable. For optimal graduate school preparation, students should maximize their enrollment in upper-division courses and actively engage in available research opportunities, as these experiences are typically expected by graduate programs.
