The Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies (HBANES) program provides a wide range of courses exploring textual, cultural, archaeological, and art historical aspects of ancient Near Eastern civilizations. Since HBANES courses frequently qualify for credit in other departments and feature flexible requirements, many students pursue double majors in fields like History, Classics, Jewish Studies, Anthropology, or Comparative Religion.
Additionally, HBANES includes a two-year biblical Hebrew language track. Using an inductive approach, students begin reading directly from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) by the conclusion of their second quarter in the first year. Subsequent coursework includes studies of biblical Hebrew prose, poetry, ancient inscriptions, and specialized courses on biblical books and themes. The program occasionally offers classes in hieroglyphic Egyptian, Ugaritic, and Akkadian (the latter two typically requiring at least two years of biblical Hebrew preparation).
