Students pursuing the general concentration have flexibility in their focus, allowing them to explore multiple Asian countries or regions rather than specializing in just one. They can tailor their elective choices to achieve various objectives, such as gaining a comprehensive understanding of Asia or examining specific themes (like politics, social transformation, or economic growth) across different Asian cultures. The program requires two years of Asian language study, with students free to select any Asian language. Native speakers of an Asian language can meet this requirement by showing proficiency equivalent to second-year college-level coursework. This open major can be declared at any time. Named after Paull Shin, the Korea Studies Program examines Korea within the wider East Asian framework. While emphasizing Korean history, society, and language, the curriculum also incorporates significant coursework on China and Japan. The program further enriches its offerings through visiting professors from various academic fields who collaborate with the permanent faculty.
