The Corcoran Department of History provides graduate programs for both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Candidates may pursue a standalone M.A. or complete it as part of their Ph.D. journey by the second year. The department also features a joint J.D./M.A. program in legal history, offered in partnership with the University of Virginia School of Law. Each academic year, around forty history graduate students are enrolled in Charlottesville, with ten to twelve being first-year candidates. This graduate program focuses on equipping students with professional historical training, primarily preparing them for academic careers. Recent alumni have secured faculty positions at prestigious institutions including Brown, Cornell, Duke, Princeton, and Yale, as well as liberal arts colleges like Davidson, Reed, and Williams, plus regional universities such as Alabama and Florida State. Others have pursued careers beyond academia, entering fields like finance, corporate sectors, library sciences, government roles, and diplomatic services. A dedicated Placement Officer assists Ph.D. candidates with academic job searches while collaborating with University Career Services to explore alternative career paths.
