The Master's program (typically spanning one and a half to two years) serves both as an initial professional qualification or as groundwork for advanced graduate studies. This independent degree does not automatically qualify students for UVA's French doctoral program.

To complete the program, students must take ten graduate-level courses, with a minimum of nine offered by the French Department, followed by a comprehensive final examination.

Those with substantial teaching experience aiming for academic careers can opt for the pedagogy-focused MA track. This specialized program offers enhanced instruction and practical experience in teaching French at the undergraduate level.

Qualification Requirements

The online admissions application. Our online application system asks you to identify whether you are applying to the MA or PhD program. Please check the MA box ONLY if you are interested in the MA as a 'stand-alone degree. If you currently hold the BA degree and are interested in the combined MA+ PhD, OR if you currently hold an MA in French from another institution and would like to pursue doctoral studies at UVA, please check the PhD box on the application.
Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's academic work, preferably in advanced literature or civilization courses.
A writing sample in French, such as an academic paper that gives an indication of the applicant's research interests. It should reflect the skill level of the author and should not have been systematically corrected by a native speaker or professor.
A personal statement of the applicant's intellectual interests, academic preparation, and motivation for undertaking graduate studies in literature and civilization. Applicants to the MA program who wish to pursue the pedagogy option must indicate this intention and explain their relevant experience.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores are required for applicants who are not native English speakers. Students who have completed an undergraduate degree at an institution where the primary language of instruction is English are exempt from the TOEFL requirement, but must write to the Director of Graduate Studies to inform her/him of this.

Applicants must upload unofficial transcripts of their entire post-secondary academic record to the online application, including all undergraduate- and graduate-level coursework. Applicants are expected to have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their undergraduate programs.

The minimum internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score requirement is 90 (including sectional minimums of 22 in speaking, 22 in writing, 23 in reading and 23 in listening). The minimum paper-based TOEFL score requirement is 600. Applicants may submit scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as an alternative to the TOEFL exam. The minimum IELTS score requirement is 7.0 in each section.
