Established in 2003 through a collaboration between the School of Law, School of Medicine, and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, this public health dual degree program, offered with the Department of Public Health Sciences, provides specializations in general practice and research as well as health policy, law, and ethics. The M.P.H. curriculum emphasizes strong partnerships with the CDC and Virginia's state and local public health agencies. Typically spanning four years and requiring 116 credits, the J.D.-M.P.H. program's structure is under review and may be modified. Currently, the program includes the full first-year law curriculum plus three additional years of coursework from both schools, with potential electives from other University graduate programs. Students must fulfill all degree requirements from both schools: for the J.D., this involves completing mandatory courses, maintaining academic standards, earning 86 credits, and completing six law school semesters; for the M.P.H., requirements include two semesters of residency, 42 approved credits (with at least 30 from coursework), and a six-credit thesis guided by faculty. IMPORTANT: ABA regulations limit J.D. candidates to a maximum of 17 credits per semester counting toward their law degree.
