The University of Virginia's sociology graduate program selects a limited group of exceptional candidates annually for its Ph.D. program. With cohorts averaging about six students yearly, we foster close faculty mentorship and intimate seminar settings to develop tomorrow's sociology researchers and educators. This selective approach enables us to offer substantial financial support to our students. While the Sociology Department forms one component of the University, we
strongly encourage students to utilize all available campus resources. These encompass library facilities, technology services, and academic offerings across Grounds. Our program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, evidenced by faculty and graduate student connections spanning the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and other schools like the Curry School of Education and School of Data Science. Department members also engage with university-wide initiatives including the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, Global Studies program, Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation, and Quantitative Collaborative. These diverse academic units provide additional avenues for scholarly exchange and building connections with researchers throughout the University community.
