UCR's faculty research encompasses the full range of sociological study, examining everything from the minute details of personal identity and emotional processes to broader societal mechanisms involving institutions, corporations, and worldwide social frameworks. Our roster of current and emeritus faculty boasts one of only two UC sociologists ever honored with the University Professor title, along with multiple Distinguished Professors, past leaders of the American and Pacific Sociological Associations (ASA, PSA), former editors of ASA-affiliated journals, section chairs, and council members, plus numerous other prestigious accolades. Our scholars maintain exceptional productivity, with recent NRC metrics on publications, citations, funding, and honors placing UCR's sociology program second among all UC sociology departments.
Central to our purpose is preparing graduate students for thriving careers in academia and research. UCR's graduate program awards PhDs while offering the option to obtain a Master's degree during the course of study. To ensure cutting-edge education, our faculty has implemented a refreshed graduate curriculum. This program delivers rigorous instruction in sociological theory and methodology, along with focused study in two of seven specialized fields: Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies, Gender Studies, Medical Sociology, Organizations and Institutions, Political Economy and Global Social Change, Race and Class Inequality, and Social Psychology. We emphasize practical research experience, fostering numerous collaborative opportunities between faculty and graduate students.
