Please note: The following explanation differentiates between academic level and term-in-residence. Term-in-residence counts how many semesters you've been enrolled in UVa's PhD program, while academic level tracks your progression through the curriculum. For students starting without an M.A., these two measures align. However, students entering with an M.A. typically receive advanced standing for previous graduate work, allowing them to advance through the curriculum one semester faster. In these instances, your first enrolled semester corresponds to the second semester of academic level one. For students with advanced standing, any requirement that must be finished by the sixth semester (for example) should be completed by their fifth term-in-residence.
