The doctoral program in nursing equips graduates for roles as researchers, nursing scientists, and educators who advance the field through scholarly investigation. Upon completing the PhD in nursing, students will:
exhibit mastery of nursing science, interdisciplinary studies, and research methodologies
enhance the foundation of nursing theory and clinical practice through original research
address critical healthcare challenges through rigorous scholarship that benefits local communities, national systems, and global health initiatives
Prospective PhD candidates must hold a BSN degree, with many applicants also possessing an MSN. Nurses with other advanced degrees (such as MPH, MBA, or MS in Health Administration) are welcome to apply.
Annually, UVA nursing doctoral students secure funding for their research and frequently disseminate findings through regional, national, and international publications and presentations.
UVA's nursing PhD emphasizes rigorous research training, featuring coursework in qualitative, quantitative, and historical methodologies. All candidates develop research proposals for academic review, with numerous students submitting to prestigious competitions like the NIHNR's annual awards.
