The Mathematics Department provides a Ph.D. program with comprehensive options for specialized study and research across various mathematical disciplines including algebra, analysis, topology, and mathematical history. For University of Virginia undergraduates, we offer accelerated pathways to obtain either a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree, either concurrently with their bachelor's degree in four years or through an additional year of study. Mathematics majors considering these graduate options should consult with their academic advisor. Faculty research spans multiple mathematical specialties. The algebra focus encompasses linear/arithmetic groups, representation theory, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, combinatorics, and geometric group theory. Analysis specialties include probability theory, mathematical physics, PDEs, operator theory, and harmonic analysis. Our topology researchers specialize in both algebraic and geometric topology, with connections to category theory and differential geometry. The history of mathematics program concentrates primarily on developments from the 19th and 20th centuries.
