The Ph.D. in Higher Education program at the School of Education and Human Development equips graduates for academic faculty positions or leadership roles in higher education institutions. This full-time, research-intensive program is exclusively available in Charlottesville. Doctoral candidates must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours of coursework (not counting dissertation credits), with potential transfer of up to 24 credits from prior graduate work, subject to approval by the advisor and program head. Required program components include a 12-credit higher education core, an 18-credit research methods minor, and 12 credits of higher education electives. Students must also complete a 12-credit thematic content minor, which may include courses from outside the department, covering areas like education policy, economics, governance, or student affairs. The program mandates ten weekly hours of mentored research during each enrolled semester, with opportunities for paid internships (10-20 hours weekly) at UVa or partner institutions, along with potential research assistantships.
