The Clinical and School Psychology Program at UVA employs the scientist-practitioner approach to train future Ph.D. psychologists in fostering the growth and mental health of children, teens, and young adults, with special focus on educational settings. Our comprehensive curriculum provides rigorous training in: core principles of clinical and school psychology, essential research methodologies for evaluating and creating evidence-based practices, and practical clinical competencies for ethical assessment, treatment, and consultation. We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, dedicated to cultivating culturally aware professionals who can effectively serve diverse populations. Our primary goal is to produce leaders who advance psychological services across prevention, intervention, and wellness promotion for young people and families.
The Program provides dual training in both clinical and school psychology specialties, holding full accreditation from the American Psychological Association and recognition by the National Association of School Psychologists. We emphasize the equal importance of research and clinical expertise, demonstrated through early student involvement in active research laboratories and our cutting-edge clinical facility starting their first semester. Each student's education builds upon fundamental psychological science while incorporating substantial research experience. This includes hands-on work in faculty-led research projects, analyzing existing datasets or contributing to ongoing studies. Students initiate a scholarly manuscript during their first year for journal submission by year two, with many graduating as published authors.
