Early childhood educators play a vital role in shaping young minds during the crucial preK-3rd grade years. Our curriculum embodies our dedication to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion as we partner with students to build a fairer world. Through collaboration with veteran teachers and community leaders, we equip future educators to recognize and nurture the unique strengths each child brings to the learning environment. We operate with integrity, prioritizing the success and welfare of students, families, and communities. As champions of educational equity, we serve as mentors, partners, and pioneers in teacher preparation. This highly-regarded early childhood education program blends comprehensive teaching theory with extensive classroom practice. Within four years, participants can obtain their teaching certification and graduate ready to manage their own preK-3rd grade classroom, providing a cost-effective route to teaching in Virginia. Prospective students must transfer into this program and may apply during their first or second year at UVA or when transferring from another school. Candidates should be progressing toward completing the specialized teacher education general studies requirements, which differ from those in the College of Arts and Sciences or the School of Education and Human Development.
While completing all prerequisites beforehand isn't mandatory, second-year applicants aiming to start in their third year should be close to finishing these requirements.
Program alumni qualify for automatic acceptance into certain UVA master's programs for five years following graduation.
