The Global Studies - Middle East & South Asia concentration examines the intricate cultural, historical, literary, and political landscape of these regions, combining MESALC's focused regional expertise with the Global Studies Program's emphasis on worldwide critical analysis.
Global Studies-Middle East and South Asia (GSMS) provides a distinctive viewpoint on 21st-century global citizenship by anchoring itself in the history, culture, language, and politics of the Middle East and South Asia while addressing broader issues in our interconnected world. This initiative challenges conventional paradigms that position EuroAmerica as the center of knowledge creation while treating regions like the ME and SA merely as sources of empirical data. As Jean and John Comaroff pose: Could the global south currently offer superior understanding of worldwide dynamics (2012)? By emphasizing scholarship from these regions, GSMS empowers students to encounter diverse perspectives that may reshape our conceptions of global issues and the fundamental questions we should be addressing.
