Located in the University of Utah's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Utah Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP) offers specialized nuclear engineering education to address key workforce needs. UNEP's curriculum prepares professionals for careers in nuclear power, radioactive waste management, nuclear medicine, radiation safety, and nuclear security. The program provides an undergraduate minor along with two graduate options: a non-thesis Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. The Ph.D. requirements are designed to meet the demands of Utah's nuclear sector as well as national and global industry needs. UNEP trains future nuclear specialists while pioneering new methods and technologies to advance nuclear science applications. We are committed to delivering exceptional education and research opportunities that equip students for successful careers and leadership roles in nuclear technology development, with strong emphasis on safety protocols to optimize nuclear energy's societal benefits. Centered around our TRIGA Nuclear Research Reactor, UNEP drives progress in diverse nuclear disciplines including actinide chemistry, energy systems, medical isotope development, nuclear security, and radiation measurement technologies.
