The MSGIS is a graduate degree designed for specialization in Geographic Information Science. This program equips students with comprehensive expertise needed for high-level GIS careers. The MSGIS concludes with a professional portfolio highlighting academic work, which also functions as a demonstration of GIS capabilities for job prospects. Note that departmental financial aid is unavailable for MSGIS candidates.
The MSGIS Program qualifies for the WRGP in-state tuition initiative. Residents from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai'i, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and the Northern Mariana Islands qualify for 110% in-state tuition rates. Candidates must satisfy all admission criteria and submit applications by specified deadlines. Indicate your WICHE WRGP applicant status to be evaluated for the reduced tuition option. Due to limited WRGP discounted spots annually, early application is recommended.
GRE scores are not mandatory for MSGIS admission. Prospective students should possess foundational knowledge in undergraduate mathematics, statistics, computing, programming, cartography, introductory GIS, and GIS methodologies as program prerequisites. Acceptable preparation includes courses such as GEOG 3100: Introduction to GIS and Cartography, GEOG 3020: Geographical Analysis or comparable statistics coursework, GEOG 5140: Methods in GIS, GEOG 1180: Introduction to Geo-Programming or equivalent programming instruction, or relevant professional experience. A $100 program fee applies each fall or spring semester of enrollment.
