This program emphasizes planning methods that safeguard shared resources like air, water, and land, while promoting beneficial land-use relationships and preventing negative impacts. It aims to boost economic advantages, build attractive and adaptable communities, distribute advantages and responsibilities fairly, and eliminate obstacles faced by environmental justice groups. Accessibility examines how transportation and digital alternatives expand life opportunities by connecting people to jobs, education, healthcare, and more. Contemporary market demands now favor neighborhoods with walkable designs and convenient access to workplaces, services, and recreational options. Students explore how these evolving patterns influence urban planning and gain expertise in formulating Smart Growth strategies. At the University, students transform into influential urban planners and designers while helping shape Utah's progressive future. The accredited Master of City and Metropolitan Planning (MCMP) equips graduates to expertly manage the expansion of communities, cities, and regions. Foundational coursework stresses environmental sustainability, intelligent growth, and equitable development through clear communication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. Combining essential competencies with focused concentrations, the program readies students for leadership positions in government agencies across all levels, private sector consultancies, and non-profit entities. Cross-disciplinary collaboration with non-planning fields is actively promoted. The program also includes hands-on community planning workshops and a culminating professional project.
