With a distinguished legacy, this graduate program ranks among the nation's pioneering initiatives. Originally launched in 1993 as an interdisciplinary collaboration between the former University Writing Program (now the Department of Writing & Rhetoric Studies) and departments including Communication, Education, Culture, and Society, and English, it transitioned to WRS in 2021. The program continues its tradition of equipping graduates for diverse academic and professional paths, with alumni now contributing to higher education institutions nationwide, public sector roles, and K-12 education systems.
This program cultivates professional expertise in writing and rhetoric studies through comprehensive scholarly training and research development. It explores rhetoric's intersection with writing as both historical and modern communication tools, its educational applications across formal and informal learning spaces, and its implementation within organizational, civic, and professional contexts. The curriculum balances foundational disciplinary knowledge with specialized research opportunities, attracting diverse cohorts of domestic and international students who bring varied perspectives to our learning community.
