The Diversity certificate offers a relevant option for all students, particularly those seeking to explore the roots and effects of diversity and social disparities. This program employs diverse viewpoints and frameworks to educate students about how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, and disability influence society—both constructively and detrimentally.
To obtain the Diversity Certificate, students need to take one mandatory social inequality course, select 3 supplementary sociology electives from the Diversity and Inequality track, and complete two related diversity courses from outside the Sociology department. Options span disciplines from Anthropology to Social Work, Disability Studies to Political Science. Beyond fostering a broader perspective, earning this certificate equips you with versatile skills that enhance career prospects across various fields.
Academic and Professional Pathways
For a more immersive learning experience, students may opt for a diversity internship (SOC 4892). Graduates can pursue roles in social services, criminal justice, or teaching. Those continuing to graduate school may qualify for professions like legal practice, counseling, academia, or nonprofit development.
