Urban Ecology is a multidisciplinary field focused on studying the connections between social, environmental, and economic systems to improve the resilience and sustainability of communities. The University of Utah's Urban Ecology program addresses challenges and possibilities in urban, suburban, and rural areas, including environmental stewardship, conservation of delicate ecosystems, leisure activities, tourism development, public land use strategies, demographic expansion, transit systems, energy generation, and urban expansion. As an Urban Ecology student, you'll enroll in courses covering urban ecosystems, urban design, practical fieldwork, economic principles, legal frameworks, and social equity, while also selecting from diverse elective subjects like eco-friendly urban design, responsible growth strategies, civic engagement, and urban themes in literature. During your final year, you'll complete a professional internship and tackle an actual environmental planning challenge through the Ecological Planning Workshop.
