The University of Utah's Ethnic Studies program investigates power dynamics as manifested through governmental institutions, societal structures, and personal interactions, questioning conventional notions of race, ethnicity, national identity, sexual orientation, and gender. Learners analyze conventional historical and cultural narratives through the lens of marginalized communities while evaluating contemporary impacts of racial discrimination. The program features core classes in ethnic studies foundations and theoretical approaches, supplemented by elective options across five focus areas: African American studies, Native American studies, Asian Pacific American studies, Chicana/o studies, or broader ethnic studies. Throughout the program, students develop skills to analyze sociopolitical and historical matters from diverse cultural perspectives within American society, employing multiple academic approaches. These analytical tools can then be utilized to address modern challenges related to racial, gender, and ethnic relations. Graduates emerge prepared for professional roles in both nonprofit and government sectors serving historically disadvantaged communities.
