The thesis track is highly advisable for students aiming for Ph.D. programs or research-focused careers. By the close of their first term, students should choose a research focus and secure a thesis advisor to guide their research and remaining course selection. Together with their advisor, students must assemble a three-person thesis committee. This committee must include two department faculty members (with the advisor serving as chair) and one external member from outside the department. With Graduate School approval, an external specialist may serve as the third member. During their thesis work, students must complete between three and six thesis credit hours. Upon finishing their research, students must prepare a thesis following Graduate School guidelines. After advisor approval, a draft will circulate to committee members for evaluation. Once the committee deems the thesis ready for defense, the student must successfully complete an oral examination.
