The Chemistry Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts in Teaching Chemistry, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. M.A.T. candidates must enroll through the School of Professional Development. Ph.D. students can pursue dissertation research across various chemistry specializations aligned with faculty expertise or explore interdisciplinary subjects with guidance from other departments. Collaborative initiatives feature optional focus areas in chemical physics and chemical biology. Stony Brook's Chemistry M.S. program offers three distinct pathways. The traditional M.S. requires coursework plus a term paper analyzing contemporary chemistry themes. Alternatively, the Chemical Research concentration reduces course requirements but mandates at least 18 research credits and an original thesis with defense. The Professional Science M.S. track blends chemistry education with a year-long internship and supplementary business, management, or communication coursework.
