The English Ph.D. program cultivates skilled scholars, critics, and educators in English literature. Students engage with coursework and dissertation supervision across diverse subjects, supported by our faculty's specialized knowledge and McFarlin Library's globally recognized manuscript and book collections. Key research areas with strong faculty support include: (1) Victorian through Modern British and Irish literature, (2) American studies encompassing cultural/gender/sexuality studies, African American literature, Indigenous texts, and women's writing, and (3) Early Modern to Eighteenth-Century British and Transatlantic literature.
Additional seminar offerings explore critical theory, composition pedagogy, and creative writing.
Graduate program oversight falls to the Director of Graduate Studies and Graduate Program Committee, with all English faculty contributing through instruction and committee participation.
Ph.D. graduates will demonstrate the ability to:
produce innovative, substantial scholarly contributions.
exhibit mastery in two specialized areas through critical assessment and synthesis of field literature.
examine and integrate theories of human, gender, and cultural diversity, applying them creatively to cultural texts.
communicate effectively through professional writing and presentations on disciplinary topics.
