UTSA's History program fosters informed perspectives, sharpens analytical abilities, and provides deep knowledge of content areas spanning U.S. and global history to examine diverse historical figures, events, and eras. History majors learn to write clearly and persuasively, think critically, evaluate arguments, and articulate ideas—skills valuable for numerous career paths.
UTSA offers a History degree with an optional Social Studies specialization, which students can declare after admission through consultation with their academic advisor. The Social Studies concentration prepares future educators to teach history, geography, government, and economics at the secondary level.
UTSA prioritizes student achievement. Through experiential learning, classroom knowledge transforms into real-world application. As a College of Liberal & Fine Arts (COLFA) student, you'll examine, participate in, and reflect on experiences to prepare for a global career. The COLFA Student Success Center offers comprehensive support for academic, personal, and professional growth, including tutoring, internship connections, career networking, and skill-building programs.
The B.A. in History with a Social Studies concentration prepares future secondary educators in history, geography, government, and economics. A highlight of the program is HIS 4143 History Standards and Their Public Reception, which explores ongoing debates among historians, educators, and the public about school history curricula.
