As geoscience professionals, we dedicate ourselves to examining Earth, other celestial bodies, and their satellites—analyzing their makeup, geological past, and dynamic nature. This encompasses understanding our planet's formation and development, its chemical and structural attributes, the timeline of life, and how societies adapt to environmental shifts and natural catastrophes. Pursuing a geoscience degree opens doors to diverse career paths across private sectors, public institutions, and academic settings. Beyond traditional roles in petroleum and mineral extraction, this qualification equally equips graduates for positions in environmental consultancies, engineering companies, water resource management, state/local regulatory bodies, and federal organizations like the USGS, National Parks, or NASA, as well as teaching roles from primary schools to universities. Notably, leadership positions in environmental firms typically require Professional Geoscientist licensure, necessitating 30 geology credit hours—a requirement all Geosciences students fulfill before graduating.
Internship programs enable hands-on professional exposure, career path exploration, and enhanced employability. Through UTSA's Handshake platform, students can browse employment openings, internships, recruitment events, and career fairs. The university's Career Center features dedicated science department advisors who guide students across all scientific disciplines regarding internship possibilities.
The Geosciences B.A. program serves as foundational preparation for professions in earth science education, legal fields, risk assessment, financial sectors, energy commerce, and environmental stewardship. However, it isn't tailored for aspiring professional geologists or those considering advanced geological studies.
This degree includes a specialized track for future 6th-12th grade Physical Science educators via the UTeachSA initiative.
The Geosciences B.A. with Physical Science Teaching Certification concentration specifically trains students for secondary education careers covering earth sciences, physics, and chemistry. The curriculum blends rigorous geoscience coursework with Texas's 6-12 Physical Science teaching standards. Certification requirements are mandatory for degree completion—students failing to fulfill these must transition to the standard B.A. or B.S. Geosciences programs.
