As geoscientists, we explore Earth, planets, and their moons to understand their makeup, past, and dynamic nature. This encompasses our planet's formation and development, its chemical and physical traits, life's history, and how humans adapt to environmental shifts and natural hazards. A geoscience degree opens doors to diverse career paths across industries, government, and education. Beyond traditional sectors like oil, gas, and mining, graduates find opportunities in environmental services, engineering, water management, and regulatory bodies at all government levels, including agencies like the USGS, National Parks, and NASA, as well as teaching positions from K-12 to university level. Advancing to management in environmental firms typically requires Professional Geoscientist licensure, which our program's 30-hour geology requirement fulfills before graduation.
Internships offer valuable work exposure, career exploration, and enhanced employability. Through UTSA's Handshake platform, students can discover jobs, internships, and networking events. The College of Science career counselor assists all science majors with internship guidance and opportunities.
The Geosciences B.A. prepares students for careers in earth science education, law, finance, energy business, and environmental management, though it's less suited for aspiring professional geologists or graduate studies in geology.
Our department provides a Geosciences Minor, a GIS Certificate, and contributes to the Geoinformatics B.S. program. Foundational coursework enables students to specialize in various geoscience and environmental science fields.
