The Master of Science in Chemistry program trains aspiring chemists for teaching and research careers across academic, industrial, and government sectors. Participants conduct hands-on laboratory work and/or computational research across diverse specializations including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical physics. This program prepares graduates for both conventional chemistry roles and interdisciplinary areas like forensic science, healthcare, and materials research. Through the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, students pursue an M.S. in Chemistry with research opportunities in multiple specializations: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, and Materials Science.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or in a related science discipline from an accredited institution in the U.S. or proof of equivalent education in a foreign institution
Official transcripts of all previous academic work.
Applicants from countries where English is not the first language are required to demonstrate English proficiency.
Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are qualified to assess the applicant's potential for graduate work.
A personal statement setting out the applicant's reasons for wishing to pursue a MS in Chemistry at UTEP and future career plans.

If you did not attend high school in the United States and your most recent institution of learning was not located in an English-speaking country, UTEP requires you to provide evidence of English-language proficiency. Minimum score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) TOEFL. Some programs require 600 or better. Minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), and minimum of 6.5 on IELTS.
