The Spanish M.A. equips students with analytical capabilities for examining literary and cultural works from Hispanic America, Spain, Brazil, and the U.S.-Mexico border region. Situated along the U.S.-Mexico border, this graduate program offers exceptional opportunities for thorough investigation and cross-cultural comparison of Spanish-language and bilingual creative works. Conditional admission may be granted to applicants lacking certain prerequisite courses or those who haven't achieved at least a B grade in them, with the requirement to complete these courses in their initial semester. Note that these preparatory courses do not contribute to degree requirements.

Qualification Requirements

Fulfillment of all general requirements for admission to the Graduate School
Completion of four (4) upper-division undergraduate survey courses in Spanish and Spanish American literature with a grade of B or better (SPAN 3301, SPAN 3302, SPAN 3303, SPAN 3304 at UTEP, or their equivalent at other institutions).

If you did not attend high school in the United States and your most recent institution of learning was not located in an English-speaking country, UTEP requires you to provide evidence of English-language proficiency. Minimum score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) TOEFL. Some programs require 600 or better. Minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), and minimum of 6.5 on IELTS.
