The Rhetoric and Composition PhD program equips graduates for professional roles as writing experts across academia, corporate sectors, and government institutions. Within higher education, scholars investigate theories surrounding writing development, application, and teaching methodologies. Outside academia, they leverage advanced research, analytical, and writing capabilities to improve organizational communication. The curriculum emphasizes digital rhetorics, cultural studies, and community involvement.

Applicants may join the program with either an undergraduate English degree or a graduate degree in Rhetoric and Composition or similar disciplines. The program requires 45-51 post-master's credit hours, encompassing foundational studies in rhetorical traditions, composition research, digital and cultural rhetorics, along with specialized coursework in technical communication, cultural analysis, and literacy studies. Students complete a community literacy internship and produce an in-depth research dissertation. The program encourages interdisciplinary exploration through elective courses in Literature, Communications, Language Studies, and Education.
