Students in biological sciences utilize advanced technology to investigate medical fields, including Hispanic cancer disparities at the Border Biomedical Research Center, preparing for careers in medicine, veterinary science, pharmaceuticals, dental studies, or scientific research. The program offers both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, with the latter incorporating language studies and a minor outside the sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences operates across two facilities: the Biology Building and the Bioscience Research Building. Administrative offices are located in the Bioscience Research Building, which spans approximately 92,500 square feet for research, offices, and conference areas. The Biology Building provides around 48,000 square feet dedicated to teaching and research laboratories. The department's faculty includes 15 Full Professors, 13 Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors, 1 Research Professor, 1 Research Associate Professor, 4 Research Assistant Professors, and 6 Lecturers.
Beyond teaching, faculty members conduct active research in their specialized fields, offering undergraduate students opportunities to contribute to these projects. Research focuses span Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, Virology, Cancer Biology, Epidemiology, Ecology, Environmental Science, and Evolutionary Biology. The university's strategic location in the Chihuahuan Desert's northern region, the Rio Grande Valley, and the U.S.-Mexico border creates a distinctive environment for both research and education.
