The Master of Arts in Literature program unites literary scholars, theorists, creative writers, and translators dedicated to exploring transnational and interdisciplinary perspectives in literary studies.
Beyond traditional literature seminars, students can engage in creative writing and translation workshops, along with diverse courses spanning film studies, intellectual history, philosophy, and visual/performing arts. The program offers two tracks: a professional path (course-based) or a research path (coursework with a research portfolio). Those focused on creative writing or translation may pursue specialized graduate certificates.
This literature master's delivers a robust grounding in literary scholarship while fostering global awareness of literary traditions, critical methods, and theoretical discussions. Unlike traditional university structures that separate literature studies by language departments, UT Dallas consolidates its approach—studying English alongside African, Asian, European, and Latin American literatures within one unified program. Creative writing and translation form essential components, emphasizing the program's belief in the vital exchange between creative practitioners and critical thinkers.
Degree requirements: The minimum requirement for admission to any master's degree program at UT Dallas is an earned UT Dallas baccalaureate degree or its equivalent with a grade average of B or better in upper-division (junior and senior level) work in the student's major field and related fields.
