The Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering provides two advanced degree programs in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Research & Industrial Engineering, delivering core expertise through research-driven instruction across multiple disciplines. The mechanical engineering graduate curriculum prepares future industry pioneers, equipping them to revolutionize energy systems, advanced materials, and information technologies to address societal challenges.
Thermal/Fluid Systems represents a key research focus, investigating diverse areas including: dielectric/conventional drying processes, combustion science, internal combustion engines, turbine blade cooling systems, turbulent flow dynamics, aerodynamic drag minimization, thermal radiation in complex media, HVAC technologies, energy efficiency solutions, computational turbulence modeling, high-speed fluid dynamics, laser diagnostics, thermal management of electronics, interfacial transport phenomena, liquid metal MHD systems, manufacturing process thermal analysis, solar radiation monitoring, renewable energy applications, micro/nanoscale thermal-fluid systems, thermal effects in laser material processing, biomedical laser-tissue interactions, and energy conversion technologies.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for graduate study in mechanical engineering, students must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
Have a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in junior- and senior-level work and in any graduate work already completed.
Hold a bachelor of science degree in physical sciences (chemistry, physics) or in an engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
TOEFL or IELTS (international students only)
Submit official transcripts from previous colleges or universities
Statement of Purpose
Three Letters of Recommendation
Applications to the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Mechanical Engineering no longer require the submission of GRE scores. Submitting these scores is optional.
A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or a comparable GPA in upper-division workjunior- and senior-level coursesand in any graduate work already completed is also required.
