Earning a Master's degree in Marine Science typically involves two to three years of graduate study, incorporating original research and teaching assistant responsibilities. The program mandates completion of thirty semester hours of graduate coursework in marine science and related disciplines. This curriculum includes six hours in a complementary natural science field, six hours of advanced marine science courses, and three core classes totaling twelve credit hours. (All master's programs require a minor consisting of at least six hours in a field outside the major). The distribution of credits between major and minor fields, along with supporting coursework, is arranged with the graduate advisor. Students must complete a six-credit thesis based on original research as part of their degree requirements.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
