The Engineering Mechanics (EM) graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin provides Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy candidates with the skills needed for academic and professional careers. Alumni gain the ability to address complex challenges across diverse sectors such as aerospace, automotive, petroleum, manufacturing, and computer engineering. Our faculty bring extensive knowledge in experimental, theoretical, and computational mechanics. The program delivers rigorous academic training and research opportunities culminating in a Master of Science in Engineering or Doctor of Philosophy in engineering mechanics. Applicants typically hold a Bachelor of Science in engineering mechanics or a related engineering discipline, though students with science or mathematics backgrounds may enroll after completing prerequisite undergraduate courses.
To earn a Master of Science in Engineering, candidates must fulfill 30 credit hours. Those selecting the Thesis/Report track complete either 24 course hours plus 6 thesis research hours (ASE or EM 698A and 698B) or 27 course hours plus 3 report research hours (ASE or EM 398R). The curriculum may incorporate up to 6 hours of upper-level undergraduate courses. Students select a faculty advisor who must approve their Program of Work (PoW) and guide their research. Master's thesis research must span two consecutive semesters, while the final research course for both Thesis and Report options must be completed during the graduation semester.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: Summer and Fall: Dec. 1; Spring: Oct. 1
