The Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering's graduate program has a global reputation for shaping students into pioneering leaders across engineering practice, research, and academia. We encourage ambitious, high-achieving students to apply for our M.S.E. and Ph.D. programs.
Today's intricate challenges at the intersection of urban development, water resources, and energy systems require engineers with both specialized expertise and broad perspectives. CAEE equips students with the foundational knowledge and collaborative skills necessary to develop groundbreaking solutions, advanced technologies, and sustainable infrastructure systems. Our approach combines innovative teaching methods with research spanning theoretical foundations to practical applications.
Through our numerous research centers, graduate students can delve into their specialized interests while joining a vibrant, intellectually engaging academic community. Featuring cutting-edge facilities, the CAEE graduate program prepares engineers to become industry leaders across private sectors, academic institutions, government agencies, and other professional domains.
Prospective students should possess an engineering undergraduate degree, though outstanding applicants from other disciplines may be admitted with the condition of completing prerequisite undergraduate coursework. Specific leveling requirements vary based on each student's academic background.
Our department provides Master of Science in Engineering degrees in both Civil Engineering and Environmental/Water Resources Engineering, while the Ph.D. is exclusively offered in Civil Engineering. Those pursuing Architectural Engineering graduate studies should apply through our Civil Engineering program.
The Sustainable Systems graduate program adopts an interdisciplinary methodology to tackle complex urban-water-energy challenges. This program highlights critical emerging connections that present opportunities for sustainable development. Leveraging UT Austin's engineering leadership, the Sustainable Systems MS/PhD offers flexible curriculum options and diverse research opportunities. Students committed to global innovation will work with cross-disciplinary faculty to analyze and implement systemic changes addressing environmental, economic, and societal needs, developing into visionary systems thinkers.
