The Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department's graduate program has a global reputation for shaping students into leaders across engineering practice, research, and academia. We encourage ambitious, high-achieving students to apply for our M.S.E. and Ph.D. programs.
Today's intricate challenges at the intersection of urban development, water systems, and energy requirements necessitate engineers with both specialized expertise and broad perspectives. CAEE equips students with comprehensive education and collaborative skills to pioneer tomorrow's sustainable technologies and innovative solutions. Our approach combines foundational theory with practical application through diverse teaching and research initiatives.
Graduate students can engage with numerous research centers, fostering an intellectually vibrant community while pursuing their academic interests. Featuring cutting-edge facilities, our program prepares engineers to lead in various sectors including industry, academia, and public service.
While an engineering undergraduate degree is preferred, outstanding applicants from other disciplines may be admitted with the condition of completing prerequisite undergraduate courses tailored to their academic background.
We provide Master of Science in Engineering degrees in both Civil Engineering and Environmental/Water Resources Engineering, while our Ph.D. program focuses exclusively on Civil Engineering. Prospective Architectural Engineering graduate students should apply through the Civil Engineering program.
Environmental and water resources engineering encompasses diverse specialties addressing ecological concerns in air, water, and land systems. This multidisciplinary field incorporates areas like water quality management, hydrology, air pollution control, coastal engineering, and waste remediation, all integrated with sustainable engineering principles that consider environmental, economic, and societal impacts.
For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing. Most applicants have a Bachelor of Science in some branch of engineering. A minimum 3.0 GPA out of 4.0 is expected for M.S. applicants.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all students whose native language is not English. Successful applicants typically have scores of at least 240 on the computer-based test (equivalent to 587 on the older paper-based test and 94-95 on the internet-based test); higher scores increase the chances of admission, IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination.
